Hey...
We have secured the following dates for racing at Race City this summer. All dates have been confirmed and are subject to track condition.
May 2 / May 3 High Performance Driving and Competition Licencing School
May 30 and 31 Race 1
July 4 and 5 Race 2
Aug. 8 and 9 Race 3
Sept. 12 and 13 Race 4
So, get the tools out, and get those cars in shape....looks like we're going racing!!!!!

I am wondering if you would be able to give me an idea of the steps needed to be allowed to race in the series? This is all fairly new to me and I would like to know what the process is.
I am guessing I need to become a WCMA member and or an ARCA member to be allowed to race. The my car probably needs to respect certain rules and I am sure I also need a racing licence to be allowed on course.
I would for sure like to be part of the High performance driving school to acquire my licence as I don't have one right now so maybe you guys can give me an idea what the steps are if it's not too much trouble?

New race members must attend a high performance driving / race school in order to obtain their WCMA Racing licence. Most people attend the WCMA High Performance driving school and Competition Licencing School inorder to achieve this. Next, you must become a member of ARCA (Alberta Race Car Association) and then you fill out the appropriate paperwork etc... and then your "paperwork" will be in order... For example a Medical Form, Racing Number Application, Race Licence Application, etc can all be found there.
But firstly what type of car are you thinking of racing? We have several different "tin top" (sedan and sports cars) classes that run simultaneously on the track. If you reply with the type of car that will help with the classification etc. All the information on car classes can be found on this WCMA website, with the pertinent guidelines and requirements for the building of the car. The ARCA website has most of the "paperwork" and application forms.
By the way you wouldn't happed to be Mr_ET from Beyond.ca would you?
Get back and post what type of car you intend to run and we can go from there. Its all a bit confusing but if you truly are interested we can help you through it all.

Yes I would happen to be that person. I have a 1997 civic coupe with the original d16y7 engine at the moment.
Due to funding and experience level I probably would not run the season this year but would really like to attend the school and get my licence.
The High performance driving school detailed in the first post would be different than the one needed to acquire the licence or it's all the same thing and would anyone have an idea of what the cost is of getting the licence?
Finally I am fairly sure that to be allowed to race with others on the roadcource I would need a fully caged car is this correct?

The aforementioned May 2/3 High Performance Driving and Competition Licencing school would be your best bet to get your racing licence. The school is conducted over two days at race city and will feature on track, classroom, and skidpad exercises (on the oval pad). In addition to in car instruction on the track you will also be able to participate in three mock race starts with a full grid of cars at the end of the second day. As for your race licence there will be a short written exam held in the classroom at the end of the school, those who pass (don't worry its not a difficult test) will be eligible to apply for their racing licence. Cost for the two day school is probably in the realm of $450 I think... but I'm not 100% sure on the exact price. In all honesty for the amount of track time and one-to-one instruction you get its a heck of a deal!
As for your Honda Civic I believe it would fall into the class IT2 or ITGT or something like that. You can look at the applicable rules for classification on the WCMA website and mull over all the intrinsic details. Both IT2 and ITGT are very large and very well supported classes so you will have plenty of competition to race against in class. I'm sure some of the Honda racing Gurus can place your car better than myself... hopefully one of them will comment soon.
In regards to funding and experience, yes racing can be expensive but most individuals can make due with a rather minimal budget. I myself race a 1984 Mazda Rx7 in the Challenge Car class and my operating costs are about as low as you can get. Several racers do not compete in every race event and thereby can afford to attend the amount of races in their budget range. Experience is not a worry. It sounds like from your beyond.ca posts that you have a healthy dose of driving experience from autocrossing and besides, all rookies have a warning triangle placed on the back of their car to alert other drivers or their racing inexperience. Every rookie I've talked to was scared to death of the first race, but generally speaking after that they were hooked and excited for every other race start and event.
Lastly yes you will need some safety modifications on your car. The most pain in the ass and costly is a full roll cage that is WCMA Tech approved. Additionally you will need a small fire extinguisher ($15 bucks), battery kill switch ($30), race seat ($varies), 5 or 6 point racing harness ($100) and then your Nomex racing suit and approved racing helmet. I purchased my seat, helmet, and racing suit off EBay for quite a low price. Depends how good you are at scavenging deals and such.

Does the car you bring to race school need all the safety gear? As in roll bar, harness etc?
I am interested in attending but my car won't be done by then.

Are there any races at Race City that don't require a prepped car? Street legal with full interior and no roll cage? Really interested in racing there but don't have my car set up as an all out race car.

You will have to look at "lapping" which are organized sessions where groups of street and prepared cars do a session on the track together. Usually there will be a strict no passing rule except on the straights and when indicated by.
Most lapping groups require you to have some fluency in track driving before you can participate. You could also look at competing in the solo 1 series if there is still space. First you need to decide if you want to compete (solo 1 or solo 2) or just get track time (lapping)
