StoryCommentsEmail StoryPrintSize A A AReport Typo.Ald. Shane Keating is trying to rev up interest among motorsports enthusiasts to ensure there's a city facility suited for their needs.
"A city this size certainly should have a race track," said Keating.
He's inviting representatives from motorsports organizations to come together and help identify what's needed in the city and what resources are available.
Keating said he wants to form a task force that will help develop a plan for a facility where racing enthusiasts can go.
Art Mackenzie, owner of Race City, has been fighting the city to keep his operations going.
The operator and the city have been embroiled in a dispute over the speedway's lease because of the planned Shepard landfill expansion on track land.
Race City's lease will expire after the 2011 season.
Keating said he's not simply trying to appease motorsports enthusiasts who may have ill feelings about the termination of the lease.
"I think that issue is coming back to the idea that when you've got one million-plus people and we don't have a facility to look after the motorsports recreation aspect, that is a deficit that needs to be addressed," said the alderman.
Keating said he wants to start by getting to know the people behind the sports and form a group that will look into providing a race track somewhere in the Calgary area.
The alderman is inviting designated representatives from various groups in the city to contact his office for a meeting on Jan. 27.
