NASA moving to Toyo RR as Spec Tire for more classes

Following the transition of Spec Miata , Spec 944 and Spec E30 last season from 1 February 2014 racing season , the American Iron , Camaro Mustang Challenge, Honda Challenge, Challenge five factors , and 986 Spec classes begin to be broadcast on Toyo Proxes two new RR - throat competition DOT radial tire during the competition dry weather.

Specifically developed for NASA classes that specify the Proxes RA1 , one of the most notable improvements over its predecessor is that the new Proxes RR does not require shaving and still provide the long life and consistent lap times of RA1 .

To facilitate cost to competitors of the transition to the new rubber will Toyo Toyo Bucks issued from 25 November 2013 and to be used for the purchase of tires Proxes RR , and will extend the expiration date on all Toyo Bucks until April 1 , 2014. Marc Sanzenbacher , Senior Manager of the Products division performance , Toyo Tire USA Corp. has this to say of the new tire :

" The Toyo Proxes RR tire is for competitors who are serious about winning . It has proven to be the best single tire on the market for consistent fast laps , just as you find the Proxes RS1 and legendary Proxes RA1 .

Interesting, no benefit to shaving the tire....I wonder what type of compounds they use to allow an increase in the optimal temperature range for the coefficient of adhesion to be at it's optimal number.   The ideal temperature range must be far greater than in the past.  Wow, technology.

We used them in CC this year.

First off they require a good heat cycle, then at least 24 hours to settle before race use. More time is better. If you don't heat cycle, you will get less performance and longevity. A bit of a pain, trying to heat cycle tires in May in Alberta (in the snow last year).

Took us a while to get used to them after R888's, and we didn't find additional speed for a few weekends. What we did find at first was that it was easier to get the same speeds as the R888's.

You can overcook them, and they become really greasy.

Treadwear is 40 vs 100 for RA1 and R888.

As they become more popular in US, it will become harder for us to get them. We have already been asked by Toyo to place our order for the entire 2015 season.

I was unable to get them as hot as the R888's, and as you know, we slide around a lot.

We also found starting pressures to be lower, and less differences between corners.

We ran the RR's on the Bandit for the LA1k.  We found the traction quite good, they lasted 4 full stints for us which was a bit over 7 hours before we corded one of them.  The others were also quite thrashed.  We ran hard for the whole time, with the first stint in the rain, so I'd guess we'd get about six and a half hours in the dry.  In contrast, we had some partially used Hankook Ventus in the middle C51 compound for the last two stints, where we finished those off.  So,in summary, the RR's were quite good to us and we were able to run consistent 1:32-1:30 lap times for the whole first four stints without issue on the RR's.  They did wear out faster than we had expected, but we were driving quite hard and they went from one scrub in session the previous weekend to cords in that race, so no extra heat cycles to harden up, which might improve longevity for sprint racing.
