Drivers medical - diabetes

Hi, I was planning on applying to ice race and then started re-thinking maybe roadracing this upcoming year. Read all the rules, etc, then the medical, and saw insulin dependant diabetics are on the "uh-oh" list. A little bit of an old bias/whatever, as diabetes management is way better now, etc, as diabetics can be pilots and police officers. Is it an insurance requirement, or can I apply for a special exemption?  I couldn't figure out who to contact directly, so if the director could contact me directly, would be appreciated.  We can even delete the message, but I didn't know what else to do.
